Kiss Me, I’m an Irish Wanna-be

Filed under: Just For Fun, On The Web, cooking, parenting — Chris @ 9:13 am

I am not Irish. Not one little bit. My husband is Italian. And yet, come March 17, we break out the green.

A friend of mine dyes whatever milk is in the bottle green for St Patricks Day. The leprechauns do it. While I think it is an adorable idea, I know my children would balk at having green milk to pour on their cereal.

I found this substitute.

Leprechaun Shake

1c milk
1 scoop vanilla ice cream
2 ice cubes
3-4drops of mint extract
2 drops of green food coloring

Blend for 10 seconds or so.

You may need to double, triple, or quintuple to the fifth power this recipe. Because that recipe seems like enough for one small child.

The History Channel has a St Patrick’s Day website for you to enjoy with your children. It is a very comprehensive look at St Patrick’s Day. The true story, the legend, green beer, and other assorted recipes that are not corn beef and cabbage. Gag. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.

Family Fun had this recipe that was easy and fun.

shamrockpretzel

It is made from canned breadstick dough and then sprinkled with colored sugar, my kind of easy. Though you could just make it with a regular bread recipe.

I did buy these tiny little treasure boxes and I had big plans of filling one for each child and having each of them go on their own individual treasure treasure hunts, but that just didn’t work out. Maybe St Patrick’s Day 2010 I’ll be more prepared.

But we did make green cupcakes, just regular cupcakes with a little green food coloring added, with vanilla frosting. Then I cut up some green spice drops and had the kids make shamrock shapes on the top.

Cupcakes

And then we ate half of them. Saving the other half for tonight after dinner, once we crash from our sugar high.

Tomorrow we will give up our Irish heritage, at least until next March. And anxiously await the easter Bunny for our next candy fix.

The Wedding Dance

Filed under: Just For Fun, On The Web — Chris @ 9:40 am

Has everyone seen the JK wedding entrance dance?  Sometimes I feel like I am the last person on earth to see anything or hear news.  They are just a couple from Minnesota who along with their family and friends decided to have an unusual entrance to the church altar.

Click here to watch the youtube video.

I dare you not to smile the entire time.  The unadulterated joy of all the participants made me cry.  And I do not cry easily.  It was beautiful.  The people were not professional dancers, but none of that mattered.

It is the sort of video that makes you believe in happily ever after.  And kind of makes you wish you were invited to that wedding.  I bet it was a whole lot of fun.

Long Hot Summer Days?

Filed under: Children, Ideas, Just For Fun — Chris @ 9:12 am

Here is a fun idea to do with your children, ages 2-102. Though I assume none of you probably have children that are 102 years old.   First, it is a project that all of them will do happily.  Second, it will keep every last one of them busy for a good while.  Third, it is a snack.  What’s not to love about it?

Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag

1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup half & half
1/4 teaspoon vanilla

6 tablespoons rock salt
1 pint-size ziploc bag
1 gallon-size ziploc bag
Ice cubes

Step One: Put the first three ingredients into the pint sized ziploc bag. Seal well. Check and make sure that is is sealed well. Check again.

Step Two: Put the pint sized ziploc bag inside of the gallon sized ziploc bag.

Step Three: Fill the gallon sized ziploc bag with ice and rock salt. (This is why you really want to make sure the smaller ziploc bag is completely sealed. Salt leaking into your ice cream…ewwwwww.)

Step Four: Shake your bags.

After about 5-10 minutes the half & half will thicken and you will have ice cream!

Take the small bag of ice cream out of the larger bag — you may want to wipe the bag off to get rid of the salt residue, especially for younger children who are not as neat. Then, grab a spoon and eat it right out of the bag.

Enjoy!

You can also add other ingredients to your bag such as chocolate syrup, sprinkles, mini-chocolate chips, crushed oreos… well, you get the idea.

Free Family Movies

Filed under: Children, Just For Fun — Chris @ 8:23 am

Summer vacation is here.  Time to start thinking of ways to kill the daylight hours and beat the heat.  Many of us are feeling the pinch from the economy downturn and taking our family out to see a movie at $7 (or more!) per ticket is out of the question.

Regal Theaters once again are running their Free Family Film Festival.  Two or three mornings a week, depending on your location, they show a free G and PG rated movie.  The film festival runs for 9 weeks, so in theory you could go see 18 different family friendly movies.

Bring on the popcorn!

Setting a World Record

Filed under: Children, Just For Fun — Chris @ 8:30 am

I remember when I was a kid I used to love looking through The Guiness Book of World Records.  My friends and I would marvel at the photos.  I can still clearly picture in my head the tallest man and the man with the longest fingernails.

We would then try to discover if there were any records that we could break.  And of course there weren’t.  The ones that we thought we might be able to do were squelched by our parents.  By why can’t we stay awake and dance for 3 days?  We can miss school.  It is the Guiness Book of World Records, you know.

My 10 year old son has recently discovered the book and is just as fascinated by it as my friends and I were all those years ago.  And now I find myself in the same position as my parents all those years ago.  No, you are not going to try and build the tallest skate ramp in the world and skateboard down it.   I don’t care if it is the Guiness Book of World Records.

Nowadays, there is a website that you can go to and browse through the catagories and even see what records people are trying to break at this exact moment.

Record my kids currently think they might be able to break:

Fastest eating of a 12″ pizza

Record that doesn’t exist, but I think that they should attempt to break:

Greatest number of consecutive days of doing your chores without being reminded

Of course looking at a website is not the same as flippping through the earmarked book, outside in your backyard, with your friends huddled around you.

Sum-sum-summertime

I know that technically it is not summer yet. And some of you who are living in cooler climates are probably cursing my sunshine and warm temperatures. Trust me, I understand. I would be cursing me too.

However, is there anything that screams, “It is summer!” more than running through a sprinkler in the front yard?

I’m not sure that there is. And for the record, I ran through it a few times myself. I, however, did so in my clothing so as not to scare the entire neighborhood.

The Neighbor Kids, Again

Filed under: Children, Humor Keeps Me Sane, Just For Fun, Keeping It Real — Chris @ 8:16 am

So somehow our house has become playground central.  Which really is fine most of the time.  I like having all the kids over here.  I like hearing what they are up to, what games they are playing, just getting to know them all.  And you know what?  I really like kids.  They are all good kids.  There are a couple that might be a bit rougher around the edges than I like, but I see this as an opportunity to model the sort of kind, compassionate behavior that would better serve them in life.

In an effort not to go broke handing snacks out the entire neighborhood I bought those ice pops that come in the plastic sleeve.  You know that ones that I mean?  I am sure that they have a name, but we just refer to them as ice pops.  They had them on sale at the grocery store a box of 100 for under $3.  That is a small price to pay to keep all the neighborhood kids happy.  None of the other neighbors hand out snacks, why should they I guess since I always am!

Our neighborhood is really big on sharing. All the kids play with each others toys.  At the end of the day if there are toys in my driveway that don’t belong to us I just stick them in my garage.  I know that the next day the owner will come over and find it.

Everyone gently reprimands the kids should they need it.  I have no qualms with someone telling one of my children to stop whatever it is they might be doing, nor do I have any hesitation about doing the same to one of the other children.  it really is a fabulous community and we are blessed to have found it.

Now if I could  just convince all of the kids that doing yard work is REALLY REALLY a fun game and they should all do it.   Weeding… it is the new jump rope.

Artwork Everywhere

Filed under: Children, Ideas, Just For Fun, On The Web, parenting — Chris @ 3:07 pm

How do you manage the copious amounts of artwork that children produce?  I get asked that question a lot from friends who struggle to find the balance between saving it all and tossing it into the trash.

A few years ago I bought frames  that came with mattes inside the frame.  Matting your your photos and paintings gives them a more professional appearance.  Matching frames make it seem like a whole ensemble of work.  Figure out what size artwork your children usually produce.  Then hit your local craft store when they are having a sale and stock up on frames with mattes that have openings the size of the artwork paper.  my kids frequesntly use 11×14″ paper, so I bought a few 16×20″ frames that have an 11×14″ opening.

I also bought 11×14″ frames with 8×10″ openings which are perfect for  highlighting just an area of a painting.  Great for the smaller children’s artwork which is usually just colorful paint splashed all over a page.  Take the matte and arrange it over the painting until an area that you like is visible.  Cut the painting to fit the frame.

My children love having their artwork displayed. And I love the vibrant colors their artwork usually contains.

Stefanie, from Totally Together Journal, recently wrote a post about the same thing. She has an ingenious idea to use cork boards and 1/4″ round moulding to create an area where her children’s artwork can be displayed and easily rotated. I love this idea for an narrow hallway or back entryway.

Scrappy Art found a way to preserve her children’s artwork in a scrapbook. Beautiful! It makes me wish that I were more crafty, but I am not.

Outdoor Games

Filed under: Children, Ideas, Just For Fun — Chris @ 9:50 am

We are lucky enough to have moved into a neighborhood filled with children who share my children’s  love for paying outside.   Every day when school ends the street fills with kids riding bikes, scooters, playing kickball, football, basketball… you name it, they are playing it.

One game the boys often play is something called “Wall Ball” and is definitely not a game I played as a kid.  I am not even sure of the exact rules.  As an observer it seems to be all about throwing the ball at your friends as hard as  you possibly can while they stand next to a wall, or usually the side of a  building.  My sons assure me that there are actual rules and a clear object to the game, but whatever that is escapes me.  And probably also them since they cannot seem to articulate the rules to me either!

Sometimes I wonder if all of the games kids play now are filled with licensed characters.  I get so tired hearing about the latest Pokemon, Bakugan, or whatever new  thing whose primary purpose seems to be separating me from my money.   It always makes me smile when I see the kids playing games that I played as a child, jump rope, hopscotch, kick ball, hide and go seek.  It gives me hope that some things never change.

I found this website which lists outdoor games and how to play them, many of  which I remember playing.

Duck, Duck, Goose

Capture the Flag

Four Square

Hopscotch

Marbles

Red Light/ Green Light

Chinese Jump Rope (I used to love playing this!  I forgot all about it until I saw this link)

Can’t remember all of those jump rope rhymes you used to sing?  Here is an exhaustive list of jump rope rhymes.

Now go on outside and pass some of these traditional games on to your children.  Please?

Healthy Kid Friendly Snacks

Filed under: Children, Ideas, Just For Fun — Chris @ 11:33 am

No that  title is not an oxymoron.  It is possible  to have snacks that are both appealing to children and healthy.  I know that it is sometimes tempting to just give in to all the junky snack requests, but the other day when my 4 yr old was whining about wanting a second package of fruit snacks and said, “But they are FRUIT!!” I realized that I needed to step in and do something.  Because just because they are called fruit snacks, doesn’t mean that they are made out of fruit.

I usually have a platter of cut up fruit out for my children to enjoy in the afternoon.  Either a bowl of grapes, cubed watermelon (less messy than having triangle slices), cubed cantaloupe.  String cheese or cubed cheese with crackers is  always available also.  But sometimes I find that boredom has set in and I need to shake things up a bit.

Trail Mix

Have you ever bought those huge bags of trail mix only to have your children eat all the M&Ms out of the bag and leave the majority of the mix which is actually healthy behind?  Try making your own from things your children do like.  Do any kids really like almonds?  I know mine don’t and almost every prepackaged trail mix we have bought has been heavy on the almonds.

I mix together:

Craisins
Dried apricots, that I snip into smaller pieces
Dried apples, also snipped into smaller pieces
Peanuts or cashews, my kids like both of these
Sunflower seeds

Dip

Don’t all kids like to dip their food into some kind of sauce?  Slice up some fruit like apples, strawberries, bananas and serve with a ramekin of vanilla yogurt.  If you give the kids little toothpicks to skewer the fruit it makes the snack THAT much more enjoyable.

Smoothies

Blend together vanilla yogurt, fruit and ice into a completely healthy, nutritious and fun snack.  Serve in a tall glass with a straw for maximum enjoyment.

Ants on a Log

My children are  insisting that I include this  perennial kid snack of celery, peanut butter, and raisins.  Even though most of them do not actually like celery.  They just like the idea of this snack.

Mini muffins

I like to make bulk batches of mini muffins and then freeze them.  Sometimes if I don’t have time to do all of the baking, I will just freeze the batter in ziploc bags.  We all know that the difficult part is mixing together the ingredients, not the actual baking part.
