My husband and I have six children, five of which are in school. We have a motto in our home and it makes things run so much smoother. "Everything has a place, everything in it's place." We are not by any means drill sergants but we encourage our children to make good choices about their things and in turn they are rewarded. It encourages them to be responsible and teaches them there are consequences, good and bad, for the choices they make regarding their belongings. It works most of the time :)

We have a bench where we put backpacks, baskets under the bench with the kids' names. In the summer, camp stuff like towels, hats, goggles go in there. In the winter, hats and gloves. We have a big basket for shoes. Helps when we come home also. Everyone needs to put their stuff where it belongs and even my youngest can do that pretty easily since he can reach everything.
