Toy Hall of Fame

Filed under: Children — Chris @ 9:32 am

Did you know that there was such a thing as a toy hall of fame?  I had no idea.  But this week I was driving in my car listening to the news when a little blurb came on about the stick being the latest toy named to the hall of fame.

The National Toy Hall of Fame is at the Strong Museum in Rochester, NY.  The museum annually inducts and showcases new and historic versions of classic toys that have been loved by generations of children.

This year three more toys were added:
Baby doll
Skateboard
and….
STICK.

Yes, a stick. And while many people laughed and criticised, I think they are spot on. How many times have your children gone outside and played with sticks? I would say that it is an everyday occurrence here.

They joined the following 38 toys have already made it into the National Toy Hall of Fame:

Alphabet Blocks
Atari®2600 Game System
Barbie®,
Bicycle,
Candy Land®,
Cardboard Box,
Checkers,
Crayola® Crayons,
Duncan® Yo-Yo,
Easy-Bake® Oven,
Erector® Set,
Etch A Sketch®,
Frisbee®,
G.I. Joe®,
Hula Hoop®,
Jack-in-the-Box,
Jacks,
Jigsaw Puzzle,
Jump Rope,
Kite,
LEGO®,
Lionel® Trains,
Lincoln Logs®,
Marbles,
Monopoly®,
Mr. Potato Head®,
Play-Doh®,
Radio Flyer® Wagon,
Raggedy Ann and Andy™,
Rocking Horse,
Roller Skates,
SCRABBLE®,
Silly Putty®,
Slinky®,
Teddy Bear,
Tinkertoy®,
Tonka® Trucks, and
View-Master®

So, what do you think? Are there any toys that think are missing from the list? The only things that have come to mind for me are the Rubik’s Cube and the horse stick (I don’t even know what it is called– you know the horse head with a stick body? Is it a hobby horse?)

  1. My son has a stick that he found while on a camping trip about a month ago. He plays with it almost everyday. lol

They left out pots, pans, and cardboard tubes. ;)

  2. I uess spools on a string would be a little out-dated . . . we did love playing with that, our sticks, and those tall phragmites swamp reeds though!

  3. My dad and I found really cool gnarled sticks when we went camping once; we brought two home and my brother and I played with them for probably a year. Mine was, at different times, a baseball bat, a sorcerer’s staff, a giant spoon to stir the wading pool, a hammer, a pencil for the sandbox, and at least a dozen things I’ve forgotten. And if you spin around really fast while holding a stick out, you can hear the air whoosh past it.

  6. I have one to add…not sure what the actual name is. The giant rubber ball with the handle attached. My brother and I each had one. What fun!!
