Water Bottles, Again!

Filed under: Children, On The Web, parenting — Chris @ 9:49 am

I ended up ordering SIGG bottles for the kids.  And threw in one for myself while I was at it.  (Using a 30% off coupon code!  Who can turn down a coupon?)

Honestly, it is one of those things that you really don’t know what to believe.  Is it THAT dangerous to drink out of plastic?  And is drinking out of metal any better?  And the PVC pipes in our homes are those bad and we just don’t know it yet, like the old lead pipes that older homes used to have?

Our Nalgene (yes, we had that brand) bottles were a couple of years old. I have always put them in the dishwasher.  I had no idea that doing so was a big no-no.  I thought the extra hot water would kill off any bacteria or mold that was growing inside of the bottles or lids.

Oh, and then to top of my self induced hysteria, I happened to look on the bottom of my travel coffee cup that I only just purchased, and it is one of those plastics that should be avoided… and most especially should not be used with hot liquids or in the dishwasher.

Guess I’ll be drinking my coffee cold from now on.  Okay, not really.  Or at least not on purpose.  I don’t use it very often and my track record for not losing those cups is not great.  So I will just live with it for now.  Now probably meaning the next 3-6 weeks.

Someone asked in the comments on the last post why the kids can’t drink out of glasses.  The answer is that they can and do.  But having a sink filled with glasses at 10am drives me batty.  No one wants to drink out of a glass that they have left sitting around because they think that someone else might have drank out of it, or ::GASP:: looked at it.  Each of us picked out a unique SIGG bottle so we can always know which one belongs to us.
And we are a family on the go– sports, classes, and day trips, so we need something portable.

  1. I swear the more I know the more scared I become. I think there is no winning in this situation, so I will take all this with a grain of salt and evaluate on a case by case basis.

Chris says: I hear you. Maybe I will make my kids just stand outside and catch rainwater in their mouths ;-)

  2. At least I hadn’t gotten around to making my big Nalgene bottle order yet! Thermoses are lined with steel instead of glass these days, aren’t they? Maybe I’ll get those for my husband to have at work (he’s out delivering stuff all day), and the Sigg type for hikes or whatnot.
