We have had to go on a budget in the last 5 months, because of a job change. However, I think we still eat healthy for only $75 a week. We are a family of 4, so that makes a difference. I don't buy pre-packeaged food and I cook only 3 times a week. I find making a menu helps and I really consider what I am buying. Sure we get the Teddy Grahams, but I make my own nuggets. I do my best to find the healthiest ingredients I can for my money. It is not really difficult.

Another interesting tidbit, when we were on WIC during Hurricane Katrina, we were forced to get things that I would never buy. We had to choose between rice or beans and I wasn't allowed the organic peanut butter that I was use to buying. The worst was the amount of juice we were given. When we applied I had to talk to a lady about nutrition and she informed me that my daughter should have only 4ozs of juice a day. Then they give us enough juice to supply a small army. And it was the worst kind of juice. My kids drink mostly milk and water, so we didn't have much use for the juice. I ended up giving it to other families in the hotel we were staying at.

I found it odd that they were telling us one thing and giving us quite another. I know it cost more to eat better, but won't it help with medical bills in the long run?

I found out I had severe food allergies in March. It has drastically changed how I eat and what I buy for my family. Once you start reading those labels, it's frightening what you learn. And yes, it is much more expensive to eat well. I can't believe how much more money we spend of food and I don't necessarily always buy organic. Just good quality. Sometimes I wish I was still oblivious.
