Well, since we just went through Gustav and was forced back to our home without power, we finally have a generator. I don't know about extreme winter, but extreme summer is no fun without a/c. I hope to never use it, again, because quite frankly it is not all it is cracked up to be.

We will be looking into getting a generator to power our entire house using natural gas. It is cheaper than you would think, but it depends on the size of your home. Some of our neigbors have them. That will be a few years out, though. It is no fun without power and it is a lot of work.

The worst part of the whole ordeal, finding ice. We didn't plug in our fridge, because there is only so much a portable (and I use that term loosely) generator can take. Besides, we didn't have an extension cord to get to the back of the fridge.

I swear I would have kissed one of those Northern power guys on the lips when our power came back on, but I couldn't catch them. ;)

We finally bought a small generator last year. Of course, it's waaay out in the shed and I don't know if we have fuel for it (and it's a really cheap-o model). We've been seriously lucky not to really need such a thing in our 17 years here (while our next-door-neighbor, with 4 kids, is on a different power company and is out of power frequently). :-o
If it's winter, I just don't want our pipes to freeze, and in summer, I don't want to lose the contents of our refrigerators!
