Best Books of the Year

Filed under: Just For Fun, On The Web — Chris @ 3:07 pm

The ten best books of the year, according to the New York Times, are books that I haven’t read. Or, gasp, even heard of.

So then in an effort to feel more literate I read the 100 Most Notable Books of the Year List. Again, I have read none of the books on the list, though a couple of them I have actually heard of before. And to think I consider myself well-read. I always have a book or three going on at any one point.

It all makes me wonder, just what have I been reading?

Maybe what Ineed is to get this book: How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read. By Pierre Bayard.  Though what is the point of that really?

So tell me, have you read any of the books on the lists?  And if you haven’t what is your favorite book that you have read this year?  I am going to go look at the stack I have piled my my bed and see if I have a favorite in there somewhere.

  1. No, I haven’t read any of them. I read Iron Weed this year and loved it. Probably one of my favorite reads of all time. As for one published this year, my favorite was We Are All Fine Here, which I read for MotherTalk.

  2. I was surprised to be completely unfamiliar with the entire list, too! And heard of only a couple on the list of 100. That’s okay. I think we’re still smart.

Best book I’ve read this year (in the fiction department, anyway) is The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, hands down. It’s the one book I’ve been recommending like crazy.

  3. Nope. None. I’m still trying to get throught the classics at this point in my life. My favorite this year has been The Count of Monte Cristo although Les Miserables was very good too. Can you believe I haven’t read these before? I can’t!

  4. Since the birth of my daughter (child 2) in June, I haven’t even finished reading a newspaper. For someone who can read a book a day, this is killing me!

    Am currently reading this one,

The Savage Garden – Mark Mills.
Fantastic book! I want my toddler and baby to just sit down and be quiet so I can read this all day – but funnily enough, it just doesn’t happen ;)

I want to read the Time Travellers Wife, but I haven’t got round to it (or the large pile of books waiting on my bedside table).

  5. I have been wanting to read Time Traveler’s Wife also. Not really sure why I haven’t other than when I go to the library my mind suddenly goes blank.

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry is one of my favorites, but it isn’t a new book
