With the weather turning cooler it is the perfect timeto start thinking aout feeding the birds. My kids love watching them out the windows and trying to identify the various types of birds. And we all have peanut butter hanging around the house, right?
For this you will need:
pinecones
peanut butter
bird seed
wire or string
I used craft wire. Wrap it around the pine cone before you coat it in peanut butter. It will be too messy to do afterward.
Spread the peanut butter on the pine cones. You don’t need a lot of it, just enough to hold the birdseed.
Roll the pine cones in a tray of bird seed.
Then hang them outside on some low bushes or trees and have a bird book handy!
We hung ours outside of our breakfast room window so we can keep an eye on them and see what birds come to visit.

I would love to do this. In fact, I did it with my son last winter, at his craft club. And then I had MAJOR guilts as I remembered why we have no birds in the garden in the first place (cats), and why there are still no birds in the garden (cats).
The cats enjoyed the bird feeders for sure

How do you stop the squirrels from ripping these apart?

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU MIX OIL WITH THE PEANUT BUTTER !! If you make this Pinecone birdfeeder with plain peanut butter, you will kill the birds who eat it. They need lubrication for the peanut butter to pass through their digestive system. Any oil— corn oil, vegetable oil, olive oil, mix with the peanut butter 1/2 and 1/2—–
After you have the peanut butter and oil mixture, then you can load it on the pinecone before rolling it in the birdseed.
Thanks !

does anyone else notice that the end produce looks likes a rat? Ok besides that, if you have a child that cannot be around peanuts, I have used shortening. My kids hang them on the fence around our house or in the trees.
