Mothers Are Worth How Much?

Filed under: Keeping It Real, On The Web, parenting — Chris @ 8:11 am

A new study says that a stay at home  mother is worth nearly $117,000 a year, if she were paid a real world salary.  (Working mothers are worth $68, 405)

The eighth annual survey by salary.com calculated a mom’s market value by studying pay levels for 10 job titles with duties that a typical mom performs, ranging from housekeeper and day care center teacher to van driver, psychologist and chief executive officer.   Most of the figure for the salary was from overtime since the job extends beyond the typical 40 hours per week.

What do you think?  I’ll admit that my first thought was that it was not nearly enough.  Followed closely by, I need a raise!

  1. They come out with these studies on a regular basis, and I’m just finding them a little depressing. They can spew out the figures as much as they want, but SAHMs are NEVER going to get either the respect or the money, so why bother?

  2. I find it odd to calculate daycare center in there. I mean do we need to get “paid” to raise our kids.

I guess the money would be nice, but would there be evaluations and firings, too?

  4. While most people use those figures to figure out how much life insurance moms need, I love to show my husband what I’m worth. He said Im worth my wieght in gold anyways. I told himk I think inflation has passed the price of gold now!
Anyone else think they need to stop throwing out figures of what we are worth and actualy put their money where their mouth is with some realtime family tax breaks for SAHM’S?

  5. Amen, Kym-berly! How do we go about getting it into legislation? Write letters to our senators and congressmen?

  7. So the working moms are worth less? Do they figure in the single working moms salary plus the salary of the stay at home mom. I figure I’m worth the two salaries since I do everything myself. Take the kids to school/day care. Work, pay for all the bills. Pick them up, take them to their activities, help with homework, cook, put them to bed, and deal with meetings at school. On top of all of that I have to work 40 hours per week, and run a part time business on the side.
