People carrying around water bottles everywhere they go has got to be one of the most annoying things I have seen. I don’t mean people engaged in athletic pursuits, like hiking, or biking, or even going on long walks. I mean people who are running into their local Target with a bottle of water. Is shopping going to dehydrate them that much?
I also hear people talking all the time about getting their eight glasses of water in every day. On an average day I am not sure I have ever taken in that much water. And I have always felt guilty about it. In an article at CNN, Food Network dietitian Ellie Krieger said:
“The general guideline is to pay attention to your thirst,” Krieger said. “Your thirst is actually a good guide of how well hydrated you are and if you drink according to your thirst, you will stay hydrated.”
She also had more good news: Liquids other than water count.
Well, that is good news for those of us who don’t want to carry hip flasks of water everywhere we go. Or for those of us who like to drink things other than water also.

i love this program!

I get annoyed with people who carry water bottles everywhere too. I might take a drink with me in the car, but I leave it in the car. If people would just drink a glass of water and not take a sip every 10 minutes they might do better about getting in the water they need. Also I had heard that you need 1/2 ounce of liquid for each pound you weigh, and 8 glasses would be way too much for me.

Not sure where you live but I am in AZ and when it is 110 outside – it is an absolute must to carry a bottle of water with you at all times. Walking from the car into that Target can very well dehydrate you! If you were to leave your water in the car, which by the way the inside of a car can top 150 degrees on a hot day here, you would burn your mouth when you drink it. Not only do I carry a bottle of water with me, I have my kids bring along their own and we carry an ice chest with a few spare waters. Recently, I was at a school outing in which I was outside for 2 hours on a day it reached 107, I drank 6 bottles of water and had 3 popscicles during those two hours and still suffered slight heat stroke.

Amy, I, too, am in Arizona and as I’m sure you know (but others might not), you can get dehydrated here while swimming in the pool! I’ve been here more than half my life, and none of us go anywhere without a water bottle (or 6) at any time of the year. The UofA has a very helpful website called AZHealthInfo.org which has more information on Desert Living at http://www.azhealthinfo.org/showPage.cfm?pageID=109&level=2
I invite anyone who questions the need to carry water bottles with them, especially desert dwellers, to read the information provided there.

It’s so much better to be hydrated!!! Get over it! I am a nurse and by the time you are thirsty you are already partially dehydrated. Your body need a constant supply of fluids and water is the best for you.

I agree with Amy, I to am a nurse and by the time you experience thirst, you are already dehydrated. So prophylactic water, even if you have to carry it around, is being proactive. Otherwise you are visiting us in the ER with a heat stroke and dehyration and getting a couple liters of fluid at the bargain price of a few hundred dollars. Seems like a better deal to buy a dollar bottle of water and annoy someone with it to me. But that’s just my opinion.
