I am just mentoring a kid who does not get money for grades. However I thought that as a college student I might offer a different perspective. School especially in college, is like a job and it can lead one to make more money. In fact, I get money for my grades in a round-about way (I have a scholarship that pays 1/2 of my tuition) As a kid I got money for my grades in junior high when the work was harder.

We usually celebrated with a dinner out . . . child's choice of restaurant. No money for grades, but everyone should celebrate a job well done.

I disagree with giving money or other awards for good grades or chores. I think that there are just somethings in life that we just do, because it is our responsiblity to do them. Also, I don't want to have those kids that when I ask them to do something they ask how much will they get. Or stop trying to do their best at anything, because there is no tangible reward at the end. I am, also, against all the rewards my daughter seems to get at school for good behavior, but there is only so much I have control over.

I ask my daughter (she is the only one in school, now) to do her best. Meaning I understand that we can't all be great at all subjects, but as long as you do work to the best of your ability then we are all good. Something I wish my dad would have done when I worked so hard in Algebra and could do no better than a C.

I will say that there is another reward besides just the knowledge gained, my pride in how well they have done. And if you are bragging I will brag to, it is looking as if my oldest (7yrs old) will be heading home with all A's, again, this year. I am very proud of her.

In the past, we have gon to Chuckee Cheese (yes, the big mouse house). The kids give their report cards to the attendant and they get a certain amount of coins per B and extra for A. Since this is the only time we go to chuckee cheese, with the exception of birthday parties, it's a big deal for them. Also, did you know there is a handipoint task to chart that? Look it up. He can then get bonus points for all those As he keeps getting towards his goals.

So far we've done rewards that encouraged behavior leading to good grades. And the reward was something that encouraged the behavior we desired as well. My daughter is in 2nd grade and really didn't want to learn to read. When it was clear she was behind, I told her for every 15 minutes she read to herself, she would earn money towards buying books from book orders. Despite not wanting to read, she loves books. So it worked well and she asked to continue that this year.

As she gets older we will obviously have to adjust our methods. But I want to encourage the study habits because they will lead to the results and carry them through in the long run more than getting an "A".

We don't give money, either. My oldest has come a long way this six weeks, so to reward her hard work, we really laid the praise on thick and took her out for pizza. We try to emphasize that giving 100% of their ability and trying their best is expected of them. However, when we see that she is really going above and beyond (for example, she voluntarily stayed after school to exceed her reading goals) we reward her with special privileges.

Way to go! You must feel great about your years of homeschooling them! I do like to give my kids a little reward for good grades, but I haven't established a set pattern yet. I want to think they work hard regardless and maybe as they get older a little financial incentive would be ok. Your kids got the good grades without a promise for a reward, so it probably wouldn't hurt to give them a little something to encourage more hard work in the future.

I never gave a monetary award to my oldest for great grades and i must say all a's are great grades (:):):):)) but when se brought home good marks we wou;d allow her to pick a treat ie dinner out, speacial item (within reason) now that the two others are both in middle school i have changed my thinking a little i need to find a way to motivate the 8th grade boy and i think cash for grades is my next plan of attack. and if i give hem money of course i willl them need to do the same for the 7th grader who does get good grades. i am think ten dollars for each a 5 for each b. i am not sure it is the best way to go about motivating the 8th grader but i have tried everything else
