There is a local farm outside of Charlotte NC that gives school kids giant cabbage plants to grow over the summer. In the fall, they ask that you take a picture of it and send it in. We tried, but alas, my daughter was not able to keep it alive, and after growing it for over a month to about 2 feet across, the neighbors cats ate it! She hopes to try again this summer, indoors this time.

I hear the giant ones are no good for eating. But they're SO fun! A friend of ours grows these and puts the biggest on display at another friend's house on the main road . . and I'VE had the honor of carving it into a giant jack-o-lantern two years in a row.

I may try to grow my own next year, even though I already know our yard is too shady, I kill everything, and it is doomed to be an utter failure. Even our giant seeds got moldy last year. But I can't resist trying! :-D

How cool. We actually bought "Giant Pumpkin" seeds this year. We grew them indoors at first from the seeds and then planned on planting them in our little 6x6 garden until we read on the package that they have to be planted 15ft apart!! Ugh. We ended up planting them in each corner of our yard. Right now we only have blooms on them and the very beginning of a pumpkin underneath it. Apparently we we did plant them it was about two months later than we are supposed too - so they probably won't be ready in time for Halloween or any type of fall festival. But, we might have some really good pumpkin pie in time for Christmas! :-)
